Helmut Rahn, who inspired Germany to their 1954 World Cup triumph, died at the age of 73, the German Football Association (DFB) said on Thursday. Rahn scored two goals including the winner in Germany's 3-2 win over Hungary in the 1954 final in Berne.

Rahn, who would have turned 74 on Saturday, scored 21 goals in 40 games for Germany.

Germany will wear black armbands in memory of the prolific winger in a friendly international against Italy on Wednesday in Stuttgart, the spokesman said.

Germany also won the World Cup in 1974 and 1990 but the 1954 campaign was the most emotional, giving the country back its pride after World War Two.

The awe-inspiring Hungary team featuring Ferenc Puskas led 2-0 in the final but Germany fought back for what is still referred to by their supporters as the "miracle from Berne".

Fritz Walter, who captained the 1954 side, died last year.
