Beckham not in traditional English mould

August 07, 2003 20:04 IST

David Beckham will find it easier to be successful at Real Madrid because he is not in the traditional mould of English players, the club's sporting director Jorge Valdano said on Thursday.

"In general English players stand out for their commitment, but they are not so skilful with the ball at their feet," the former Argentine international was quoted as saying on the club's website.

"In contrast Beckham's most characteristic trait is his excellent control of the ball and that will make it much easier for him to adapt.

"English players usually have more problems with the style of play rather than with style of life, but Beckham will have no difficulties feeling comfortable playing with this team."

The England captain has appeared to settle in well with his new team and produced a note-worthy performance in his second match with Real on their pre-season tour of the Far East.

He scored a spectacular goal with a trademark curling free kick at the end of the first half and turned in an assured display when he moved off the right flank to play a more central role in his side's 3-0 win against FC Tokyo on Tuesday.

"Despite all the pressure on him, he didn't play to show off," said Valdano. "He played for the team and demonstrated his exceptional physical prowess by getting involved all over the pitch and helping to bring some balance to the team."

Valdano said he had been pleasantly surprised how quickly Beckham has adapted to life away from Manchester United.

"We thought that because of the language barrier and the fact that he had played for the same team since he was a child...that he would have more difficulties.

"But in terms of getting on with his new team mates, doing the training and playing the games he appears to be very happy and that is vital if he wants to play good football."
