BSF down ASEB

March 31, 2003 23:15 IST

BSF, Jalandhar, defeated Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) 2-0 to post their second victory in Group A in the round one final phase Second Division National Football League in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

Both teams have played three matches in the six-team league. BSF have seven points from two wins and a draw, while ASEB are at the bottom with three losses.

The match turned out to be a dull, low-key affair. BSF dictated terms in the first-half. Their first goal came as early as the second minute following a move on the right flank, involving strikers Gurjit and Negi, with the latter shooting home from close range.

The Assam side, who were mostly confined to their own half, broke away in the 12th minute but a Kishore Das cross was headed over the bar by Utpal Basumatary.

BSF scored their second goal in the 30th minute. A fine bout of passing betweeen Gurjit and medio Santosh Kajur saw the latter complete the finishing touches.

The second-half saw the losers mount pressure on the BSF goal. Machander Singh had a hectic time under the BSF bar but he emerged with flying colours after bringing off several spectacular saves.
