China win women's
Champions Trophy hockey

Hosts China won its first major hockey title after beating defending champions and favourites Argentina 5-3 on penalties, after the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of extra-time, in the final of the 10th women's Champions Trophy in Macau on Sunday.

The architect of China's victory was their goalkeeper, Nie Ya Li, who brought off three stunning saves in the tie-breaker.

The teams had drawn 1-1 in the league stage.

The Chinese chould have clinched the issue in normal time itself but they turned erratic late in the second session, surrendered a two-goal lead and almost handed the crown to the south Americans, who scored twice in the last eight minutes to take the match into extra-time.

Mai Shoo Yan put China ahead in the 17th minute and then Hou Xiao Lan increased the lead in the 27th minute.

China called the shots in the second session too but failed to add to their two-goal lead.

The introduction Lucia Aymar to centre-forward position changed the complexion of the match. Aymar repeatedly broke through the Chinese defence. Two fine passes from her in the 62nd and 66th minutes saw Vanina Oneto score and take the match into extra-time.

In the tie-breaker, the Chinese converted three strokes while Argentina could only manage to get one in.

The Netherlands beat Australia 4-3 top claim the bronze medal while New Zealand beat England 2-0 to take fifth place.

Argentina’s Cecilia Rognoni was voted player of the tournament.

Vanina Oneto was the top scorer with five goals.

The fairplay award went to New Zealand.
