Bharat Petroleum win Surjit hockey

Bharat Petroleum and Northern Railway won the men's and women's titles respectively in the Surjit Singh hockey tournament which concluded in Jalandhar on Saturday.

In the finals, at the Burlton Park stadium, while Bharat Petroleum beat Punjab and Sind Bank 3-2 via a golden goal, scored by Bipin Fernandez, Northern Railway got the better of Haryana XI 3-2.

PSB forged ahead in the 17th minute through Parminder Singh but Sourab Bishnoi scored from a penalty-corner in the 31st minute to enable Bharat Petroleum go into the breather on level terms 1-1.

Sandeep Singh then put the bankmen ahead for the second time in the match in the 47th minute but Amar Aiyana drew parity for Bharat Petroleum eight minutes later after receiving a pass from Tushar Khandekar.

In the dying minutes of extra-time international Fernandez scored from a penalty-corner to seal the fate of the six-time champions and Bharat Petroleum the title.
