Former Pakistan hockey captain in jail for stealing
Former Pakistan World Cup-winning hockey captain Mansoor Ahmed was
sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined $33,250 for
stealing a tonne of silver from a customs warehouse, court
sources said on Tuesday.
Ahmed, 33, who captained Pakistan to victory in the 1994
World Cup in Australia, said he would appeal against the
sentence.
"I am devastated and will appeal," Ahmed, who is also the holder of Pakistan's highest civil honour,
the Pride of Performance award, said.
The former hockey star was in charge of the warehouse until being arrested along with two others last June on suspicion of stealing $161,254 of silver.
Ahmed, who will be given another two years if he does not
pay the fine, made his Pakistan debut in 1986 and retired from
the game in 1997.
