Schumacher wins
Canadian Grand Prix
Reigning world champion Michael Schumacher, in a Ferrari, won the Canadian Formula One Grand
Prix in Montreal for his sixth victory in eight races this year.
McLaren's David Coulthard of Britain, who won the last
race in Monaco, came second and Schumacher's teammate Rubens
Barrichello of Brazil was third at the Gilles Villeneuve
circuit on Sunday.
Juan Pablo Montoya, who started on pole position, spun
off with engine problems with 13 laps to go.
The Colombian Williams driver had smoke coming out of
the back of his car on lap 57 and he pulled to the side of the
track at the end of the home straight.
Schumacher, who now has 70 points for a 43-point lead
with nine races to go, earned Ferrari's 150th Grand Prix win.
Montoya was ahead by the first corner though Barrichello
had moved past Schumacher in what appeared to be planned
tactics by Ferrari.
Barrichello got past Montoya at the start of the second
lap and then Montoya caused a surprise to have his first pit
stop after just 14 circuits.
Montoya found himself in front by the 39th lap after both
Schumacher and Barrichello had gone into the pits. A further
pit stop by Montoya put him behind Schumacher but his
challenge for victory was soon to be stopped short by
mechanical problems.
