Australia's Ian Thorpe launched his bid for a magnificent seven Commonwealth Games gold medals by smashing his own world record to win the men’s 400m Freestyle.

Thorpe raced to victory in 3.40.08 seconds, beating his own world best time of 3.40.17, set at the 2001 World Championships in Japan.
