East Bengal, ITI move to the semis

A resurgent East Bengal edged out Salgaocar 2-1 while ITI showed the door to defending champion Mohun Bagan, beating them by an identical margin, to reach the semifinals from Group "B" and Group "A" respectively in the 114th Durand Cup football tournament on Sunday.

With today's victory against 16-time champions Mohun Bagan, ITI, Bangalore, topped the three-team Group "A" with four points while Bagan finished second in the group with two points.

East Bengal, who drew their earlier match with Punjab Police in Group "B", head group "B" with four points after Sunday's win followed by Salgaocar who have two points from the win against Punjab Police.

ITI booked a place in the first semifinal on February 13 against either Mumbai's Mahindra United or Kerala's FC Kochin who will fight it out on Monday for a slot to the last four from Group C.

On the other hand, East Bengal will play the second semifinal on February 14 against the winner of Group "D" in which the formidable Goa's Zee Churchil will need only a draw against the Under-19 Indian team on Monday.
