JCT down Tollygunge Agragami

December 21, 2002 20:44 IST

JCT Mills, Phagwara, notched their second successive victory, defeating Tollygunge Agragami 2-0, in the seventh National Football League, at the Guru Nanak stadium in Ludhiana, on Saturday.

Hardeep Gill scored the first goal in the 24th minute and promising young striker Harvinder Singh (jr) got the next at the fag end of the match.

However, credit should also be given to their Ghanian goalkeeper Mansuri Mohammed, who, playing his first match, brought off four brilliant saves.

This was JCT's second win this season at home, having beaten Indian Bank last week at the same venue. They have eight points while Tollygunge have four.

JCT, despite missing the services of I M Vijayan who had picked-up two yellow cards, were on the offensive right from the start. It was in the 24th minute of the game that their Ghanian recruit Yeboah, after collecting the ball, pushed it to winger Jaswinder who ran down to send a cross, which Hardep Gill converted into a goal.

After the breather, Tollygunge put pressure on the rival defence through their Nigerian strikers Akeem Abolanle and Josuaj. However, JCT custodian Mansuri, whose transfer was cleared only days back, brought of some fine saves.

Hardeep Saini and Joe Paul Ancheri controlled the proceedings for JCT in the mid-field and time and again neutralised many an opposition attack.

In the dying moments of the game, Hardeep Gill once again was at the centrestage when he dodged past two defenders and deflected the ball to Harvinder, whose low shot beat the Tollygunge custodian to seal the match in favour of JCT.
