Humpy emerges sole leader

Basking in the glory of winning the second Grandmaster norm, junior World champion Koneru Humpy defeated Dusko Prelevic of Yugoslavia in the penultimate round to lead the table with eight points in the Third Saturday Grandmasters chess tournament in Belgrade.

Humpy adopted the Nimzo Indian defence and humbled the Yugoslav opponent in 45 moves in a rook pawn ending game and will now take on Ognjan Todorov of Bulgaria in the final 11th round where she requires a minimum draw to win the title.

The 14-year-old, who leads the table with eight points, is closely followed by Mihajilo Stojenovic (Yugoslavia) with 7.5, but a draw in the last round will ensure Humpy the title as she had defeated Stojenovic in the fifth round.

Humpy's eight points came from six wins and four draws off the ten games held so far.

The points position after the 10th round: Koneru Humpy (India, 8 points), Mihajilo Stojanovic (Yugoslavia, 7.5), Martinez Lopez (Spain, 5.5), Pavle Orlov (Yugoslavia, 5), Goran Kosanovic (Yugoslavia, 5), Ognajan Todorov (Bulgaria, 4.5).

The tournament is a Category-7 GM tournament, where average Elo rating of the tournament is 2415 with 11 rounds.

Twelve players from four countries -- India, Spain, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia -- are participating.
