Injured Dokic pulls out of Shanghai Open

Yugoslav second seed Jelena Dokic withdrew from the Shanghai Open women's tournament on Monday with a strained left ankle.

Dokic suffered the injury while defeating Russia's Elena Dementieva in the Kremlin Cup final on Sunday.

"I'm disappointed I can't come back to Shanghai because I had a great time there last year," Dokic said in a statement from Moscow. "But after straining my ankle early in the Moscow final, I need to rest it for upcoming tournaments."

Italian seventh seed Rita Grande reached the second round in Shanghai at the expense of her doubles partner Alexandra Fusai of France, whom she beat 6-4 6-7 6-4.

The only other seed in first-round action on Monday, number six Marlene Weingartner of Germany, was ousted by Japan's Rika Fujiwara 6-4 6-1.

Top seed Monica Seles, fresh from landing her 50th career title in the Japan Open on Sunday, plays her opening match on Tuesday.
