Gopichand upset in semi-finals

Second seed Pullela Gopichand was upset in the semi-finals of the Indonesian Open on Saturday by unseeded local hope Marleve Mainaky.

Yet to come to terms with the new scoring system, which favours fast play, Gopichand lost in straight games 2-7, 6-8, 0-7.

A disappointed Gopichand admitted he found it difficult to adjust to the new system and said, "I tried in the second set to play harder to take the set but failed and in the third, I just lost control of the game."

Mainaky will meet eighth seed Lee Tsuen Sang of Malaysia in the final who dumped top seed South Korean Lee Hyun Il 7-5, 7-5, 7-4 in just 34 minutes.

In the women's singles, Hong Kong's top-seeded Chen Wang beat host player Cindana Hartono 5-7 7-3 7-1 7-2 in a game which lasted 56 minutes and will play Indonesian Ellen Angelina in the final who beat Lidya Djaelawijaya 7-4, 7-3, 8-6.

The men's doubles final will be an all-Indonesian affair as the top seeds Tony Gunawan/Halim Haryanto brushed aside fellow Indonesians Davis Efraim/Karel Mainaky 7-4, 7-4, 7-3.

They will meet fourth seed pair of Candra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto.
