Malleswari gives birth to boy

Olympic bronze medal winning weightlifter Karnam Malleswari on Thursday became the proud mother of a healthy baby boy.

The boy, born at 1522 hours (IST) at Sachdeva Hospital in Yamuna Nagar (Haryana), weighed 3.70 kg, family sources informed.

Both the mother and child are doing fine, they added.

Malleswari, who became the first Indian woman ever to win an Olympic medal, will miss this year's Goodwill Games and the inaugural Afro-Asian Games in November but is expected to be back in action for the 2002 Asian Games at Pusan.

Malleswari, out of action for most of the year, surprised everyone by her appearance at a sports award function in New Delhi in June.
