Auckland Test: Rain stops play

A nail biting finish in the first Test between Australia and New Zealand at Auckland was postponed to the final day when rain prevented play on the fourth day.

New Zealand are 151 for five in their second innings, needing another 130 runs to halt the Aussie blitz in Tests. The Australians have won seven Tests in a row, and captain Steve Waugh believes his side is the finest team to have represented his country ever.

Craig McMillan is on a solid 57 with the big hitting Chris Cairns keeping him company on 20.

According to The Melbourne Age, heavy rain began falling just as the umpires walked on to Eden Park at 1100 local time to inspect the surface, which had been saturated by overnight rain.

Though the pitch was not affected, the outfield was drenched. Ground staff hope the outfield will dry quickly and enable play on Wednesday.

Shane Warne will anxiously await play to resume -- the great legspinner needs just one wicket to overtake Dennis Lillee's Australian record of 355 Test wickets.
