Anand back to winning ways

Indian Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand rose from the ashes to snatch a win over Alexander Khalifman in the penultimate round of the City of Linares 2000 Super GM chess tournament.

The Anand-Khalifman duel was the only one in the round which produced a result as the other two games ended in a draw. That put the tournament standings in a unique position, with Russians Gary Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik sharing the top spot with 5.5 points each and the rest following in positions from three to six.

Anand is now tied with Khalifman, Peter Leko and Alexi Shirov.

In the final round Kasparov meets Anand, while Kramnik faces Peter Leko and Shirov clashes with Khalifman.

Anand must be relishing the prospect of meeting Kasparov in the final round after his victory over Khalifman, who till this loss seemed to have found himself in elite company. Khalifman had even managed two draws against Kasparov.
