Efforts on to get Paes, Bhupathi together for Olympics

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are likely to team up for the coming Sydney Olympics.

The former world No. 1 doubles pair recently split, citing personal reasons, and are playing with different partners on the world circuit. But efforts are now on to get them together to represent India at the September Games, as the country has a realistic chance of winning a gold in tennis's doubles event.

Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa on Thursday said every effort is being made to get the ace pair together.

"I have been informed by the All India Tennis Association, which is making efforts in this regard, that chances of the ace doubles pair playing for India in the Olympics are quite bright.

"Their parents and the federation are working to get them together to represent India in the Olympics," he said.

Saying the country's interest comes before any personal interest, Dhindsa added: "Whether to play together in professional tournaments or not is their personal choice. But where the country's prestige is involved, they should come together."
