Kramnik checks Anand in Dortmund

Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand of India lost his sixth round match to top seed and world number two Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, at the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2000 being played at Dortmund.

The game was crucial, for more reasons than one. With a fine win over Michael Adams in round five, Anand had taken the leader position. Here, he was up against the man who recently replaced him in the world number two slot. The inherent tension, thus, told on both players, and their game was characterised by mistakes on either side of the board.

Following his defeat, Anand now shares his lead position with Peter Leko and Kramnik, all of whom have four points, while Michael Adams is immediately behind on the board with 3.5.

In the other matches of the day, Evgeny Bareev of Russia beat Robert Huebner of Germany, while Vladimir Akopian drew with computer program Deep Junior 6. Jeroen Piket drew with Alexander Khalifman.
