2006 World Cup soccer in Germany

Germany will host the 2006 World Cup soccer finals.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the decision at a news conference on Thursday after a meeting of the 24-member FIFA executive to pick one of four candidates for the finals.

Germany was chosen ahead of South Africa, England and Morocco.

It will be the second time that Germany will staged the tournament, though the first as a united country. West Germany hosted the finals in 1974.
