'I'm honoured,' says Bradman

Donald Bradman on Thursday said he is honoured by his selection as Wisden's cricketer of the 20th century.

In a rare public statement, Bradman said he is also pleased Jack Hobbs was chosen in the poll run by cricketing almanac Wisden to decide the top players of the past century.

"I'm very honoured to have been selected as one of the five Wisden cricketers of the century," Bradman said in a statement issued through the Bradman Museum in Bowral, New South Wales.

"I'm particularly pleased that Sir Jack Hobbs is there as he was one of my boyhood heroes."

Bradman, whose Test batting average of 99.94 has gone unchallenged since his retirement in 1948, was the clear winner. He was the only player to be chosen by each member of the 100-strong judging panel of cricketing experts.

West Indies great Garfield Sobers was second in the poll with 90 votes. English legend Hobbs polled 30 votes while Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne received 27 votes and Viv Richards, of the West Indies, 25.
