Ten years ago today, a young boy walked into the international arena.

Ten years later, he dominates it as few have done in the history of the game.

It has been a long journey -- at times incredible, at times frustrating. In the table below, we capture the major milestones of Tendulkar's 10-year trek to greatness.

 15 November, 1989  Sachin Tendulkar at 16 years 205 days became India's youngest Test player and the fourth youngest to appear in a Test match. He also became India's 186th Test player. Went in at number six - scored 15 (was bowled by another debutant Waqar Younis!).
 Test v Pakistan at Karachi
 23 November, 1989  Scored his maiden fifty (59 in 248 minutes, 165 balls, 4 fours) and was involved in a 143 run partnership for the fifth wicket with Sanjay Manjrekar. At 16 years 212 days he became the youngest to score a Test fifty and also be associated in a hundred run partnership in Test history.
 Test v Pakistan at Faisalabad
 18 December, 1989  At 16 years 237 days, made his ODI debut. He became the youngest Indian and second youngest to do so in ODIs. He was dismissed first-ball (ct Wasim Akram b Waqar Younis). He became India's 73rd ODI player.
 ODI v Pakistan at Gujranwala
 10 February, 1990  Scored 88 and missed the record at 16 years 293 days of being the youngest to score a Test hundred.
 Test v New Zealand at Napier
 26 July, 1990  At 17 years 94 days became the youngest to appear in a Lord's Test match and the second youngest to appear in a Test in England.
 Test v England at Lord's
 9 August, 1990  Scored 68 and at 17 years 108 days became the youngest to score a fifty in a Test in England. In thesecond innings he scored his maiden Test hundred - an unbeaten 119 (in his ninth Test match, in 225 minutes, 189 balls, 17 fours). He became the second youngest to score a Test hundred. He also put on an unbeaten 160 for the seventh wicket with Manoj Prabhakar.

 23 November, 1990  Played in his first home Test after 10 Tests abroad.
 Test v Sri Lanka at Chandigarh
 5 December, 1990  Scored his maiden fifty in ODIs (53 in 41 balls, 1 six, 7 fours) in his 9th match. Also captured two wickets for 39 in 9 overs - his first two wickets of his international career. He also won his maiden man of the match award for this effort.
 ODI v Sri Lanka at Pune
 18 October, 1991  Scored an unbeaten 52 in just 40 balls.
 ODI v Pakistan at Sharjah
 22 October, 1991  Captured four wickets for 34 in 10 overs. Then his best ever bowling figures.
 ODI v West Indies at Sharjah
 2 January, 1992  Scored an unbeaten 148 (in 298 minutes, 213 balls, 14 fours). At 18 years 257 days he became the youngest to score a Test hundred in Australia. He added 196 for the fifth wicket with Ravi Shastri.
 Test v Australia at Sydney
 7 March, 1992  Reached his 1000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 81 which was in his 36th ODI match - 1075 runs (avg 35.83), with no hundreds and 10 fifties. Then had a batting strike-rate of : 78.24 per 100 balls.
 ODI v Zimbabwe at Hamilton
 26 November, 1992  Reached his 1000th run of his Test career during his innings of 111 which was in his 19th Test match - 1079 runs (avg 39.96), with four hundreds and four fifties. At 19 years 217 days he became the youngest in Test history to do so.
 Test v South Africa at Johannesburg
 11 February, 1993  Scored his then highest Test score of 165 (in 361 minutes, 296 balls, 1 six, 24 fours).
 Test v England at Chennai
 19 March, 1994  Reached his 2000th run of his Test career during his innings of 43 which was in his 32nd Test match - 2023 runs (avg 50.58), with seven hundreds and ten fifties. At 20 years 331 days he became the youngest in Test history to do so.
 Test v New Zealand at Hamilton
 27 March, 1994  Opened the Indian batting for the first time in his career. Blasted 82 in 69 minutes, 49 balls, with 2 sixes and 15 fours. His fifty came in just 34 balls. His other scoring strokes included one 3 and three 2s. His last scoring stroke before his dismissal - was a single!
 ODI v New Zealand at Auckland
 13 April, 1994  Reached his 2000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 63 which was in his 73rd ODI match - 2006 runs (avg 32.89), with no hundreds and 16 fifties. He then had a batting strike-rate of : 77.18 per 100 balls.
 ODI v UAE at Sharjah
 9 September, 1994  Achieved his maiden hundred in ODIs - 110 (in 185 minutes, 132 balls, 2 sixes, 8 fours). It came in his 79th ODI match. His record at this point of his career was: 2236 runs (avg 33.88), with 18 scores in the fifties. Had a batting strike-rate of 78.54 runs per 100 balls.
 ODI v Australia at Colombo (Premadasa)
 1 December, 1994  Achieved his then highest Test score of 179 (in 412 minutes, 319 balls, 1 six, 24 fours).
 Test v West Indies at Nagpur
 9 April, 1995  Reached his 3000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 112* which was in his 96th ODI match - 3029 runs (avg 36.94), with 4 hundreds and 25 fifties. He then had a batting strike-rate of : 80.24 per 100 balls.
 ODI v Sri Lanka at Sharjah
 13 March, 1996  Became the first and only batsman to aggregate 500 runs in a World Cup tournament. In all he made 523 runs (avg 87.17) in 7 matches.
 ODI v Sri Lanka at Calcutta (World Cup semi-final)
 17 April, 1996  Reached his 4000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 17 which was in his 115th ODI match - 4001 runs (avg 40.01), with 8 hundreds and 33 fifties. He then had a batting strike-rate of : 81.69 per 100 balls.
 ODI v South Africa at Sharjah
 4 July, 1996  Scored 177 (in 462 minutes, 360 balls, 26 fours) - then his longest first-class innings.
 Test v England at Nottingham
 28 August, 1996  His first match as captain of India in his 120th match of his career. Scored 110 (195 minutes, 139 balls, 1 six, 5 fours). However India lost by nine wickets.
 ODI v Sri Lanka at Colombo (Premadasa)
 10 October, 1996  His first Test as captain came in his 42nd Test of his career. India won the match by seven wickets.
 Test v Australia at Delhi
 7 December, 1996  Reached his 3000th run of his Test career during his innings of 61 which was in his 45th Test match - 3087 runs (avg 50.61), with 10 hundreds and 15 fifties. At 23 years 228 days he became the youngest in Test history to do so.
 Test v South Africa at Kanpur
 2 January, 1997  Scored 169 (in 333 minutes, 252 balls, 26 fours) - then his highest score as captain. It is still the highest score by an Indian against South Africa.
 Test v South Africa at Cape Town
 12 February, 1997  Reached his 5000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 32 which was in his 141st ODI match - 5021 runs (avg 40.17), with 11 hundreds and 42 fifties. He then had a batting strike-rate of : 81.71 per 100 balls.
 ODI v South Africa at Durban
 18 September, 1997  Took his 50th catch (of Salim Malik) in his 162nd match
 ODI v Pakistan at Toronto
 3 December, 1997  Reached his 4000th run of his Test career during his innings of 148 which was in his 58th Test match - 4106 runs (avg 51.97), with 14 hundreds and 18 fifties.
 Test v Sri Lanka at Mumbai
 1 January, 1998  Was stripped of captaincy before the start Independence Cup at Dhaka. His captaincy record then read as: Tests: 17 (matches), 3 (won), 4 (lost) and 10 (drawn) and ODIs: 54 (matches), 17 (won), 31 (lost), 5 (no-result) and 1 (tie).
 
 11 January, 1998  Captured his 50th wicket (Inzamamul Haq) in his 175th match - 50 wickets (avg 58.96). He then had a bowling economy-rate of : 4.88 runs per over.
 ODI v Pakistan at Dhaka
 14 January, 1998  Reached his 6000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 95 which was in his 176th ODI match - 6050 runs (avg 39.29), with 12 hundreds and 51 fifties. He then had a batting strike-rate of : 82.84 per 100 balls. Performed an all-round feat in this match - 95 and 3 for 45.
 ODI v Pakistan at Dhaka
 1 April, 1998  Captured 5 wickets for 32 runs in 10 overs - his best bowling figures in any class of cricket.
 ODI v Australia at Kochi
 24 April, 1998  Scored hundreds in successive matches - 143 (in 131 balls, 5 sixes, 9 fours) on 22-4-1998, considered perhaps the best ever one-day innings; and 134 (in 131 balls, 3 sixes, 12 fours) two days later! This was his 185th consecutive ODI match since 25-4-1990 - the maximum by any player in ODI history.
 ODI v Australia at Sharjah
 7 July, 1998  Reached his 7000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 128 which was in his 196th ODI match - 7070 runs (avg 41.10), with 17 hundreds and 59 fifties. He then had a batting strike-rate of : 85.17 per 100 balls.
 ODI v Sri Lanka at Colombo (Premadasa)
 26 September, 1998  Scored his 18th ODI hundred - 127* (in 155 minutes, 130 balls, 1 six, 13 fours) - to become the batsman with maximum hundreds in ODIs. This was his 198th match.
 ODI v Zimbabwe at Bulawayo
 28 October, 1998  Achieved his best all-round performance of his career in his 201st match, when he scored a 141 (191 minutes, 128 balls, 3 sixes, 13 fours) and then captured 4 for 38 in 9.1 overs.
 ODI v Australia at Dhaka
 13 November, 1998  At the end of his innings of 124* (in 140 minutes, 92 balls, 6 sixes, 12 fours), he reached an aggregate of 1894 runs (avg 65.31) in 34 matches - the maximum run aggregate by any batsman in ODIs in a calendar year.
 ODI v Zimbabwe at Sharjah
 16 February, 1999  Reached his 5000th run of his Test career during his innings of 9 which was in his 67th Test match - 5000 runs (avg 53.19), with 18 hundreds and 20 fifties.
 Test v Pakistan at Calcutta
 8 June, 1999  Reached his 8000th run of his ODI career during his innings of 45 which was in his 217th ODI match - 8038 runs (avg 42.53), with 22 hundreds and 65 fifties. He then had a batting strike-rate of : 86.47 per 100 balls.
 ODI v Pakistan at Manchester
 1 August, 1999  Was reinstated as captain after the World Cup.
 
 22 October, 1999  Claimed his 50th catch (Craig Spearman) in his 70th Test.
 Test v New Zealand at Kanpur
 29 October, 1999  Scored 217 (in 494 minutes, 343 balls, 29 fours) his highest first-class score of his career. His maiden double-hundred came in his 71st Test match. His score is the highest individual score by an Indian captain in Tests.
 Test v New Zealand at Ahmedabad
 8 November, 1999  Scored 186* - his highest one-day score of his career. It was the fourth highest individual score in ODI history, but the highest by an Indian and by an ODI captain. Was involved in the highest ever partnership for any wicket in ODIs with Rahul Dravid when they added 331 for the 2nd wicket. His captaincy record as on now read as: Tests: 20 (matches), 4 (won), 4 (lost) and 12 (drawn) and ODIs: 63 (matches), 21 (won), 35 (lost), 6 (no-result) and 1 (tie).
