Bailey takes sprint honours at Barcelona

World record holder Donovan Bailey managed to put some of the sourness of his defeat at the recent Goodwill Games behind him, as he edged out Davidson Ezinwa of Nigeria to win the 100m at the Barcelona International Track Meet.

The Canadian sprinter, badly beaten by Maurice Greene of the US last week at Uniondale, covered the short sprint in 10.27 -- way over the world record timing of 9.84 he set at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Ezinwa finished in 10.23 while Jamaica's Michael Green was third with 10.43.

Steve Lewis of the US won the 400 metres in a time of of 45:38, ahead of Ken Harnden of Zimbabwe with 45:49.

In the women's category, 1993 world champion Maria Mutola of Mozambique came first in the 800m with a time of 1:58.27, while Yelena Afanasyeva of Russia ran the distance in 2:00.17.

The meet was robbed of one of its star attractions when Jamaica's 100m star Marlene Ottey notified the organisers, hours before the start, that she was pulling out owing to an unspecified injury.

The meet, which has an IAAF permit status, was held to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the staging of the Barcelona 1992 Olympics at the Montjuic Stadium.
