[Count your days]

   Sylvia D'Souza

"Ever wonder how long you'll live?" The Death Test starts with those ominous words. "If you're the quiet, boring type, you might just live to a 100. On the other hand, if you're like us, maybe you should be dead already." So there was quite some hope for me.

February 2, 2057
at the age of 78…

On that day you will most likely die from:
- Cancer (35%)
- Alien Abduction (13%)
- Suicide (8%)
- Horrible Accident (8%)
- Contagious Disease (8%)
- Homicide (7%)
- Heart Attack (6%)

Now, I know I'll have to die someday and 78 isn't such a bad age to do the right thing, but if you expect me to get abducted by aliens or bump off myself, that's expecting a little too much.

This was turning out to be fun, though. I wondered what other life calculators would have to say about my precious life? Would they announce me a corpse at 40 or was I destined to live to 90? After all, the answer were just a few Web sites away and as always, I had nothing to do… The Death Clock does not waste time over questions. It uses a very simple way of figuring out how many seconds you have left to live. It takes your age and subtracts it from an average life span (one for men, one for women). That number is then converted into seconds.

My "Personal day of death", it seems, is "Tuesday, April 2, 2058" and the last I saw I had 1, 767, 995, 919 more seconds left to live. If you care to watch the seconds as they tick away from your life, there is an option for setting up a page called your "personal Death Clock".

The Dead Letter Office" has some interesting user comments on the site. "This website sucks like hell !!! Do you think that scaring away little kids will make you go to heaven? No way! …And yeah, just for your information, only God in heaven can decide when we will die and how long we will live. …May your crops rot and your teeth drop." Looks like some people take their lives too seriously.

Long to live didn't mince words. "You have lived 8,463 days and have 24,752 days left to live… You should die on Friday December 27, 2069 at 1:30:07 AM." I like preciseness at all times, but I wish it didn't have to be now.

The Longevity Game (based on life insurance industry research) was supposed to be an "interactive lifestyle and health quiz, to get a general idea of how long you may live past retirement."

I wasn't prepared to find anything in this life expectancy calculation thing, but some of the questions asked here do give good pointers towards a healthier and longer life. Blood pressure, height and weight, family medical history, diet, stress, exercise, driving habits, smoking, drinking, drugs are just some of the things one should watch out for.

Luckily for me, the result of the quiz was optimistic. It pegs me at 83!

The site also features three people who've lived to the age of 100. They tell us "what it is they did or didn't do to achieve this milestone."

The Living to 100 Life Expectancy Calculator is based on studies of centenarians and other longevity research. "The average person is born with a set of genes that would allow them to live to 85 years of age and maybe longer. People who take appropriate preventive steps may add as many as 10 quality years to that. People who fail to heed the messages of preventive medicine may subtract substantial years from their lives."

LivingTo100 showed me up as average, giving me a lifespan of 85 years. So, maybe I haven't done badly in my life. But, on the other hand, I haven't done particularly well, either. Perhaps, I can learn a few lessons from the centurions. Maybe you should, too.
