SMS has set new standards in quick and easy communication. It's not just a utility, but also a habit for today's wireless generation. The ability to send small chunks of information across continents in a matter of seconds -- either free or for a negligible cost -- be it for business, entertainment, information or some thing as critical as consent for surgery, has revolutionised the way people communicate today. What was a privilege a few years ago has now become a need.
SMS can be sent through an activated cell phone having text messaging support, or through a Web interface that connects directly to a cellular service provider. Additionally, some Instant Messengers enable you to message buddies logged into their messenger thought their cell phones.
Unfortunately, popular sites like Mtnsms and Netpiper have gone paid, much to the chagrin of their regular users. Also, Cellnext does not offer SMS anymore.
But there are still some free services left, and we decided to evaluate these based:
- Functionality
- Ease of use
- Requirements; such as registration and whether the sender also needs to have a cell phone
- The networks they connect to
- The number of messages allowed
- Other features
CBFSMS
Does not require registration, and offers unlimited and ad-free SMS with comprehensive delivery information. It has a free email service that intimates you when you get mail. What's more, you can also complain about unsolicited messages. It connects to cellular networks in almost all countries and provides a listing of them.
It's quite easy to use and doesn't require you to enter your cell phone number. This service minimises the chances of automatic messages and spam from bots, by asking users to confirm a number displayed on the screen.
SMS.ac
You don't need a cell number to activate an account with this service, and the registration process is easy. However, you are only allotted a daily quota of five messages. It has loads of additional features including address book, clubs, outbox that conveys message status, personal profiles and people search. It has a vast area network with major service providers on its list.
ICQ
ICQ allows you to send SMS from the Web interface as well as its messenger. Senders need to register, though this isn't mandatory for the recipient. It connects to many cellular networks, and lists them by country.
You also get an online SMS inbox in which to receive replies. In addition, the ICQ messenger also stores all your SMS messages in a history folder. There is an online tutorial for beginners.
Yahoo! Messenger
Allows you to login to your messenger through your cell phone. Once online, your buddies can contact you by simply sending a chat message up to 160 characters. There's no limit on the number of messages. This service is currently available in India in conjunction with the following networks: Orange in Mumbai, Essar Cellphone in Delhi, Command in Kolkata and Cellforce in Gujarat.
There are a host of other services that offer free SMS, but unfortunately most of them do not service India. Then there are sites like Fonetastic. Its homepage promises free SMS if you register. However, once you do that and log in, you are told that the free SMS service has been discontinued.
