January 1: I make five New Year's resolutions.
January 2: I've already broken four!
As each year draws to a close, we carefully chart out the changes we want to
make in our lives. But as the new year begins, we find it increasingly
difficult to implement them. In a fit of frustration, I once decided that
the only resolution I'd make, would be not to make any more.
Unfortunately, that's not the answer. The solution is not to stop making
resolutions, but to seek out ways to abide by them. Here's something that
should help:
MyGoals.com has tools that enable you to set goals
and accomplish them. Irrespective of the nature, importance or time limit of
your goal, this personalised service provides a goal-setting process and
interactive tools like automated reminders, advice, guidelines and tips.
'There are things you'd like to get done, and we're here to help', says the
site.
Begin setting your goal by selecting a category of your choice. You could
choose from health,
relationships, time
management, money, career, education and hobbies. Once you settle on a
goal, you can either follow a pre-made goalplan to get started faster, or
create your own plan of
action. For the latter, you enter your aim and starting date, obstacles that
you are likely to encounter, and tasks that could help remove these
obstacles. You will then receive daily, weekly, monthly or random email
reminders to keep you on track. As you complete and check off a task, you
are taken back to a page that charts your progress.

Everything can be customised: You can add and delete tasks and obstacles,
updating your due dates, and make changes in your plan. This is a paid
service, but it comes with a 30-day free trial.
How To Keep Your New Years Resolution has information on
making resolutions and tips on keeping them. There's also a checklist that
you can use. What you do is tick your goals, and revisit the page monthly to
see if you are keeping up.
A Brand New Year is another site promising
'fresh starts, new goals and complete re-evaluations of life and habits'. It
sorts issues into three sections: physical (exercise, quit smoking),
mental (relationships) and
lifestyle (changes,
evaluations). It also links to pages offering advice on setting and
attaining goals, analysing your relationships, etc.
