If Warner Bros didn't like the idea of fans putting up Web sites with their own stories surrounding the Harry Potter characters, the chances of them liking Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized Parody are remote.

What's Barry Trotter? A spoof by Michael Gerber, dedicated to 'JK Rowling, with impudent admiration'. It's a Fantastic book, less due to its contents than because it's been published by a company called Fantastic.

Characters here are spin-offs from Harry Potter. Ordinary folk, referred to as Muggles in HP are called Muddles here, and while Harry goes to Hogwarts in the company of Ron and Hermione, Barry studies at Hogwash along with pals Lon and Ermine! Other parodies: Gryffindor - Grittyfloor, Hagrid - Hafwid, Dumbledore - Bumblemore and of course Lord Voldemort - Lord Valumart.

You can expect 'a lot of "potty humor" in this book, as well as a lot having to do with sex,' according to a reviewer on amazon.com.

So it wouldn't be appropriate for children? 'These days, is life appropriate for children?' asks Gerber, who adds that as the characters in Barry Trotter are 22 years old, they don't live G-rated lives.

While the publishers market BT as something that's 'poorly written, incredible crass, and contains jokes about bodily functions that would embarrass a five-year-old', it has obvious merits and can be enjoyed by fans of the Harry Potter books, as well as those who have only seen the movie.

While the book isn't online, you can read the first chapter here and check if your bookstore has a copy.

One other thing: At the author's behest, do consider instances of nonstandard spelling, grammar and punctuation to be intentional jokes. And if you truly admire Gerber's creativity, you can even make a donation, though 'donors are hereby warned that they may be spent on liquor'.

Online Conversion

How many hectares are 800 acres? And how many square metres are 1020 square feet? Online Conversion accurately converts units of length, temperature, speed, volume, weight and more.

When you leaf through your grandmother's age-old recipes and see things like 'Add a dash of pepper and a pinch of salt' do you go 'Huh'? Online Conversion's cooking section tells you how much is one dash (almost five drops) and one pinch (two dashes)!

You can also convert clothing sizes between countries.

Here are some other interesting converters and calculators:

Disposable Planet? Measure Your Impact

Each year, you consume a certain portion of the environment's resources. Using calculations, it is possible to determine how large an area of our planet caters solely to your needs. This area is called your 'ecological footprint'.

Fill up this form to find out how large your footprint is.

If the Earth were to be divided equally, each person would be allotted 5.5 acres. But the site states that the average student footprint is around 10 acres. If true, it implies that the average person could be taking up almost double his fair share of natural resources.

No wonder there's an alarming depletion!

Once you find out your footprint size, see how it compares to the 5.5 acres that you should be taking up. If it's larger, you can go through the form once again, and see which resources you can cut down on.

BBC News Online helps you measure the impact you make. Take this short quiz that evaluates your eating habits, accommodation, mode of travel and conservation efforts, and you'll find out how many planets would be needed if everyone's lifestyle was just like yours.

Finish the Civil War Thriller Contest

A guy called Jim Musgrave began writing a war thriller. He's more than halfway through but probably developed writer's block and decided to ask Netizens for help.

'I need to plan the exciting conclusion of my Civil War thriller, Iron Maiden, about the battle of the U. S. S. Monitor and the C. S. S. Virginia, and you can help me,' reads his Web site.

What do you have to do? Download the ebook, read through it, think of a fitting end and email your ideas to Musgrave before November 30. It doesn't matter whether you're a gifted writer or not - you just think of the plotlines.

If your idea is selected, you get credited and receive a 'limited edition copy of the finished book before it reaches bookstores'.
