When you need to download or send files over the Internet, Ashwin, you will sometimes find that large files move slowly on account of their size. At times, multimedia and heavy graphic files can take a couple of hours to get transfer.

This is where compression helps. The operation reduces the size of a file and, as a result, also the time taken to transfer or download it. Compressed files are called 'zipped files'.

The most common compressed files will have extensions like .zip, .sit and .tar for PCs, Macintosh and Unix. There are also zip files with the extension .exe (eg. program files) that are self-extracting and don't need another software to launch.
Once the file (or files) is compressed, you will need a 'decompresser' to open it. The commonly used ones are Winzip, PKUNZIP and StuffIt.
