[How do I put my photos online?] [Ask Dr. Know]
  How can I put my
  photographs on the Web?
      - Tanya Verma

Ah, Tanya.

Your question reminds me of my aching joints. Just last year, I lugged all my dusty picture albums down from the attic to prove to Bubbles that I had dated two girls simultaneously, at the only New Year party I ever went to.

That's when my trusty parrot, Bubbles, suggested I set up an online photo album to save me that kind of trouble in future. Though there will be differences in size and quality of photographs, the good thing is that Bubbles can now glance through my pictures anytime he likes, saving me the trouble of climbing those winding staircases again and again.

WEB RESOURCES:

So, to answer your question, the simplest and cheapest way to get your pictures online is to have it done as part of the developing and printing process. Such services have become common in the US over the past couple of years, and Fotango, a start-up based in London, now offers one in Europe too.

Another option is to use a Digital Camera, which saves you the hassle of processing film and lets you publish your photographs almost instantly. Photo Forum has a lot of resources and reviews on these gizmos, if you're interested. Bubbles, however, finds them cumbersome on account of their relatively small memory capacities.

Now, if all you have are developed pictures, do what I did. Use a scanner to get those pics on to your computer. Builders.com has lots of advice in this department. You could also get a free scan, courtesy Rediff, of course.

Once you have you photographs scanned and in a .gif or a .jpg format, the next thing to do is find a page where you can display them free of cost. GeoCities is a good idea, while users of Yahoo and Hotmail are already entitled to a free online photo album.

Most sites have an easy upload procedure, similar to adding an attachment to your mail. You can also segregate your album in different categories, or even transfer digital pictures to sites like Snapfish that will upload them for free.

Shutterfly goes a step further and allows you to 'fix' your pictures by removing common flaws like red eye, or making them more attractive by adding borders or frames.

If you're worried about how to link a whole album, Photopoint allows you to create your own movie by adding music and graphics to your photos. It also lets you rotate an image any way you like.

Lastly, Tanya, remember that space does matter online. Even with Yahoo's generous 25 megabytes of free space, I could only manage around 100 photographs of Bubbles and his antics. The best thing to do, then, is open multiple accounts, like I have, or use different album sites for different people.

I'm off to create a new one for Bubbles. It's about what he can do with chewing gum. Watch out for that one!
