The United States Senate has put off for a day the vote on President Barack Obama's [Images] choice Hillary Clinton [Images] as Secretary of State after strong opposition from a lawmaker who is seeking more transparency from the Clinton Foundation.

The Senate approved as many as seven of Obama's nominees within hours of his being sworn in.

Senator John Cornyn, who opposed Clinton's nomination, said he still had concerns about foreign donations to the foundation headed by Hillary's husband and former president Bill Clinton [Images].

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled a vote on the nomination for this afternoon.

The Clinton Foundation is a global non-profit organisation involved in social welfare and poverty alleviation work mostly in third-world country. A large number of donors' to the foundation are from aborad.

The Obama Team and Democratic leaders were eager to confirm Clinton's nomination as they want to Clinton to move into the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department as soon as possible, given the urgent foreign policy challenges being faced by the US right now, especially in the Gulf and South Asia.

Cornyn, the Republican Senator from Texas, who has been strongly opposing Clinton's nomination, can block a Senate voice vote for a day, but he can't stop a roll call vote.
