The best source of information could be gathered from local police stations across the country, said Home Minister P Chidambaram [Images], speaking at the chief ministers' conference on Tuesday.

"Nothing can happen without the knowledge of the local station house officer. I would say that a constable or an assistant sub-inspector should be exclusively devoted to this task and he should not be burdened with any other work," Chidambaram said, stressing the need to beef up the security in the country.

He said while making opening comments on Internal Security.

Chidambaram requested the chief ministers to go through the details of various steps that need to be taken.

"We will wait for your response," he said.

'Four security hubs are being set up and the Centre would assist the state governments in preparing security forces that will be good enough to meet terrorist threats," he said.

"Sharing intelligence on the real-time basis is of utmost importance. Equally important is the quick response to the crisis. We would provide necessary equipment to prepare out forces to meet such challenges," Chidambaram said.
