The entire country was put under a heightened security alert on Saturday in the wake of the serial blasts in Delhi and security beefed up at all crowded public places and key installations.

The alert came soon after the Union Home Ministry issued an advisory to all states and union territories asking them to remain vigilant and step up security following the Delhi [Images] blasts.

Security in Mumbai and Maharashtra, which are already in a state of high alert, for the final day of Ganeshotsav on Sunday, was enhanced further as lakhs of people are expected to take part in the immersion of Ganesha idols.

Ahmedabad [Images], which was rocked by serial blasts which left 55 people dead on July 26, and the diamond city of Vadodara where several live bombs were recovered were also put on high alert.

In Hyderabad, which too borne the brunt of terror attacks, about 26,000 police personnel, including armed police and Rapid Action Force, would be deployed as part of security arrangements, particularly in view of immersion of Ganesha idols on Sunday.

The police have been asked to be extra vigilant in railway stations, airports, bus terminuses, markets and all public places across West Bengal, Orissa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh [Images], Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh [Images].

Vehicles were checked in Gurgaon, Faridabad and other Haryana towns bordering Delhi.

Security was further strengthened in Tamil Nadu where police claimed to have busted a terror module in July soon
after Ahmedabad blasts.
