The Republican senator trails Obama by only two points, or 45-47 per cent. Obama's lead falls within the survey's margin of error.

McCain leads among whites, 52-40 per cent, and men, 49-45 per cent.

Obama is ahead among independents by 10 points, women by six points. He leads among voters who have already cast a ballot during the early voting period, 51-38 per cent, media reports said in Washington.

The Democrat has a favourable-unfavourable rating of 52-41 per cent, while McCain has 56-38 per cent.

The survey was conducted from October 27 to November 2 among 1,773 likely voters of Florida. Its margin of error is 2.3 per cent.

Florida, which voted Republican in 2004, is a crucial swing state that has 27 Electoral College votes.

In a WSJ/NBC poll conducted over the weekend, the Republican nominee has shaved two points off Obamas lead in the past week, but is still trailing by eight points, 51 to 43 per cent among likely voters.

"The poll shows some slight movement for McCain. But with just 48 hours left, it's going to be a challenge to make up the rest of the difference," said Neil Newhouse, a Republican pollster who conducts the survey with Democrat Peter D Hart.

Obama led by 13 points, 53 to 40 per cent, in Gallups daily tracking poll of registered voters, up from 11 points on Saturday and on Sunday and 7 points a week ago. Among likely voters, Gallup showed him with a slightly narrower 53 to 42 per cent lead, up from 51 to 43 per cent on Sunday.

A Zogby daily tracker also showed Obama on an upward swing but with a narrower edge, now leading his Republican rival 50.9 to 43.8 per cent.
