India, Canada discuss ties over telephone

Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper on Monday called up his Indian counterpart, Dr Manmohan Singh [Images], to offer his condolences on the tragedy in Assam in which as many as 76 people were killed and 300 injured.

In a press statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office in Ottawa, Harper began by offering Canada's [Images] heartfelt condolences for the victims of the October 30 terrorist bombings in Assam, from where Dr Singh had just returned. 

No other details were provided but indications are there was some discussion about terrorist activities in India.

The two prime ministers then discussed the global financial crisis and the meeting of G20 leaders and heads of the UN, IMF and World Bank on November 14-15 in Washington. 

As part of this exchange, the press release indicated, the two leaders discussed the need for real dialogue and unity amongst G20 nations at the Washington meeting to send a strong signal to the global market.
