US poll: Bill Clinton denies playing race card
May 27, 2008

Former US president Bill Clinton [Images] feels that his wife Hillary Rodham will be the next occupant at the White House despite the slim chances she has in the race with Barack Obama.

The charismatic former president answered 15 questions from People,  ranging from Hillary to daughter Chelsea and Oprah Winfrey.

Asked if it was harder to campaign for Hillary than it was for  himself, he said, "No, for me in a way it's easier  -- except that it's harder for me not to talk too long because I get the feeling that if they all knew her like I do, she'd get 80 percent of the vote."

Saying that his wife is being unnecessarily targeted, he said the "emergence of his daughter had been the second best thing in his life".

Elaborating on Hillary, he said, "The most amazing thing is Hillary's ability to endure in the face of all the blows that have been rained on her. When I met her, I found that in her personal relationships she lacked self-confidence and was shy. She is having more fun now than at the beginning. If you look at her, she seems perfectly relaxed, doesn't she?"

Saying the Press has been biased against Hillary, he said most journos belonged to Obama's demographic.

Asked if Oprah Winfrey's, who is close to Clinton, support to Obama came as a surprise, the former president said he knew she would only support the Democratic candidate as he hailed from Chicago.

He also dismissed the notion that there was no contest between Obama and Hillary. He said, "Let everybody vote. Let every vote be counted and see where we are."

Terming Obama "very talented", he said he and Hillary had never played any race card in the campaign. The ex-president said, "I'm not responsible for what other people say and what other people think. I have lived too long. All I can say is You line up what you've done, I'll line up what I've done, and we'll see who's got a good life. I was really hurt about it at first. I am way over being hurt. This was cold-blooded, calculated, manipulated and a revolting strategy."
