Sushil Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, was given a breather by the top brass of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday, even as the rebellion by a section of legislators against Modi showed no signs of abating.

The party's top brass met in New Delhi for over three hours to discuss the issue and opted to make a last-ditch effort to avert the crisis before taking any decision.

"I have invited senior leaders from the state to know what they have to say about the matter," BJP president Rajnath Singh told a group of journalists in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The BJP core group met at senior leader L K Advani's residence before a crucial meeting of the Parliamentary Board to discuss the Bihar crisis, which has come at a time when the party is upbeat after a series of Assembly election wins ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The party central leadership is seriously viewing the crisis fuelled by last month's Cabinet reshuffle in which two senior BJP ministers -- Chandra Mohan Rai and Janardhan Prasad Sagriwal -- were dropped and portfolios of two heavyweights Nandkishore Yadav and Ashwini Kumar Choubey were changed.

Speculation is rife about the party mulling on stripping Modi of his BJP legislative party leader post as a compromise formula to placate the dissidents, who have been demanding nothing less than replacement of the Deputy Chief Minister.
