An Australian woman was on Saturday shot at and wounded by a man believed to be her lover, who later committed suicide by turning the revolver on himself, in Vrindavan at Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

"Saurav, 28, nephew of former Uttar Pradesh minister Tejpal Singh, shot 26-year-old Leela, daughter of Susan, a resident of Perth in Australia, at Raman Reti locality at around 2 am, following an altercation between them," Senior Superintendent of Police of Mathura R K Chaturvedi said.

Saurav then committed suicide with the same revolver, he said.

Leela was taken to a hospital in Agra [Images], where her condition was stated to be critical, Chaturvedi said. The revolver and a car, belonging to Saurav's father Makkhan Singh, were seized.

Chaturvedi said Saurav was believed to have had an affair with the Australian woman, who had been living in Vrindavan for the last five years, along with her two brothers.
