The grand old man prevailed in the battle of votes against his daughter-in-law in Delhi's [Images] Tilak Nagar which saw a bitter contest between close family members.

Anita Babbar of Congress proved no match to her father-in-law O P Babbar of BJP, who defeated her in the electoral battle.

The septuagenarian three-time MLA, Babar won the assembly elections from Tilak Nagar defeating the doctor-turned-politician by a margin of 12,118  votes.

The senior Babbar got 38,314 votes while his daughter-in-law had 26,196 ballots cast in her favour.

"It is my eighth election from this area," said the senior Babbar who considered Anita, a councillor from the area, a "political novice".

Asked if there was a rift in the family due to political allegiances, Babbar said there was no bitterness on his side. "I understand well that such things are part of politics, there is no rift from my side," he said.

However, Anita believed Babbar's track record has been inconsistent in the area.

"Our grandfather, who was O P Babbar's father, was a staunch Congressman. It was O P who brought shame to him by joining the Sangh in 1967," alleged the 42-year-old doctor.

"However, it is now about political loyalties and it hardly matters that we belong to the same family," she said.
