The yellowing monument of love will be given a special mud treatment to restore its former white marble glory.

A paste of fuller's earth or aluminium silicate will be applied on the Taj, N K Samadhiya, Chief chemical assistant with the Archaeological survey of India said in Agra [Images] on Tuesday.

The paste will absorb all dust particles embedded in the marble. It will dry eventually and fall off after 48 hours, the archaeologist said.

Remnants of the paste will be cleared with a brush dipped in distilled or acid-free water.

"This treatment will remove the yellowish tinge from the marble and make it look white and shining, Samadhia said, adding that fuller's earth is very safe for the Taj.

In the first phase of the treatment, the lower outside walls and trellises of the main structure will be treated.

The last time such a treatment was given to the monument was in 2000.
