Eight militants including six from the United Liberation Front of Assom and two from the Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front surrendered to the Army on Saturday.

The surrender reflects the success of renewed intensive operations by the security forces, claimed the Army.

One of the surrendered militants is a woman cadre of the ULFA. Jainali Das was trained in the outfit's erstwhile base at Bhutan in 1999. She has worked closely with wanted ULFA leader Hira Sarania in Barpeta, Nalbari, Golpara and Guwahati. 

All the terrorists are well trained in weapon handling and combat tactics. They have been involved in several abductions, extortion and killings, said Army sources. 

The ULFA militants submitted a large cache of arms and ammunition including Chinese grenades, improvised explosive devices, hand-made bombs etc to the Army at Tamulpur camp in the presence of the superintendent of police of Baksa district.

The Army also claimed that 27 insurgents have been killed in Lower Assam areas this year and 200 miltants have been arrested.

The massive operation launched by the Army in Karbi Anglong hill district, in the wake of the murder of innocent Hindi-speaking people by KLNLF militants in August, has managed to eliminate five hardcore KLNLF cadres, Army sources said on Saturday. A large cache of arms and ammunition have also been seized during the operation and two terrorist camps have been busted.
