Citing its 'multi-dimensional linkages' with Myanmar, the Indian side noted that as a 'close and friendly neighbour,' it wanted any initiatives to be 'mindful of the need' to ensure that the country is 'peaceful and stable.'

"India will continue to play a constructive and positive role, along with like-minded countries, to this end," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said while briefing on the talks Gambari had with Dr Singh, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon during his two-day visit to New Delhi since Monday.

Gambari expected India to continue to encourage the Myanmarese Junta to work with the UN to achieve the common objective of peaceful, stable and prosperous Myanmar.

"Theoretically, all of us can do more," he said.

Mukherjee, in his interaction with the UN special envoy, recalled his meeting with Myanmar Foreign Minister U Nyan Win in New York where he stressed the need for expediting the implementation of political reform and national reconciliation process so that the concerns of the international community are addressed.

Mukherjee emphasised that this process should be broad-based to include all sections of the society and added that the UN Good Offices should facilitate political reform in a constructive way through an integrated and comprehensive approach.

In his message, Ban conveyed his appreciation for the efforts by India, both bilaterally and in the context of the United Nations.

Gambari will visit China next as a part of his six-nation tour to urge Asian countries to take lead in resolving the crisis in Myanmar in the wake of enhance sanctions from the US and the European Union.

Praising China for its efforts in Myanmar, he said "China has been quite helpful to the secretary general and to me personally by getting consent of the government of Myanmar for my last visit during the crisis and also to allow to me stay longer. I am going to Beijing [Images] to acknowledge that."
