Chandrakanathan alias Pillayan, the mastermind of several suicide attacks,  has turned against renegade Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam leader Karuna Amman, a media report said in Colombo on Monday.

"A one time close friend and ally of Karuna Amman -- who had parted ways with Tigers supremo V Prabhakaran over two years ago -- Pillayan is now probably his most dreaded enemy," the Daily Mirror newspaper said.

The dissident leader shot into limelight following a bitter split within the Karuna headed Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal consisting mostly of the members who split from the LTTE in March, 2004.

"As one of the masterminds of suicide attacks, Pillayan would identify targets and clear the path for our suicide cadres to successfully carry out their mission," a close associate of Pillayan told the newspaper.

After joining the LTTE at the age of 16, Pillayan eventually became part of the LTTE intelligence unit. He began masterminding suicide attacks against the security forces, including operations in Jaffna and Elephant pass.

"Now with Karuna Amman reportedly fleeing to Britain as a result of the deepening rift, Pillayan has been tipped to take over the leadership of the TMVP," the Daily Mirror said.
