Tremors rock parts of Gujarat; 1 killed, 5 injured

A woman was killed and five persons were injured as tremors rocked many parts of Gujarat on Tuesday, officials said.

Two tremors rocked Saurashtra, Ahmedabad and Surat in Gujarat. The epicentre was in the Sasan area of Talala taluka of Junagadh district.

The first tremor occurred at 0558 hours and had a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale. The effect of the first tremor was limited to Junagadh and nearby Amreli district.

The second tremor which occurred at around 1520 hours was measured at 5.1 on the Richter scale, officials said. The effect of the second tremor was felt in Saurashtra, Ahmedabad and Surat as well.

A 78-year-old woman was killed when the wall of her house collapsed in Haripura village in the second tremor.

Around, 50 mud houses also collapsed in the village due to the tremor in the village, sources said.

Three villages of Talala taluka of Junagadh district -- Haripura, Chitravad and Arenver -- were the worst hit as several houses developed wide cracks, while many mud houses in these village collapsed, sources said.

Reports of damage to houses have also come from seven other villages of the Talala taluka but they were not severe, they said.

District administration have reached these villages and began relief operations, they added.

Gujarat Relief Commissioner Rajesh Kishore said they have sent teams of health and roads and building department to help in the relief work and to assess the damage.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has sent two ministers Ashok Bhatt and Ratilal Sureja to the villages, official sources said.

Fear-stricken people ran out of their houses and offices in Junagadh and Amreli districts, reports reaching Junagadh from the districts said.

The effect of the tremor was also felt in Ahmedabad, where people too came out of their houses.

Reports from Surat said a mild tremor was felt in some areas of that city also.
