A 49-year-old woman of Indian origin was killed in a hit-and-run accident at East Meadow in Long Island.

Nina Sharma, who was standing on the driveway of her house, was hit by a van as her husband, Rajinder, was bringing trash cans to the kerb on Saturday, police said.

Their two young sons, playing video games next door, came as they heard the thud to find their father clutching the body of their mother.

Nina was dragged to 65 feet and pronounced dead at the hospital, reports said.

Police arrested one Robert Fowler, who was being held on a $50,000 bail. Investigators said they found debris from Fowler's car at the scene of accident.

"This investigation was put together because of pieces of his vehicle that were found at the scene," said Michael Fleming of the Nassau County police department, adding: "Particularly, some plastic headlight assembly parts and lens assembly on the right front side of his vehicle."

The couple was planning to go for a late night stroll when the accident occurred.
