An Indian couple, arrested on charges of human trafficking three months ago, faces life imprisonment and heavy penalties if convicted.

The Dubai Court of Crimes is currently trying the couple arrested at the Dubai International Airport while on transit to Paris from India, the Evening Post reported on Monday.

The suspicion of the airport police was aroused after noticing the disparity in the ages of the middle-aged couple and the two teenaged boys accompanying them, it said.

The 54-year-old man and his 50-year-old wife claimed they had adopted the children, aged 14 and 15 years.

Passport details showed that the couple were the parents of the children. They were arrested and charged with human trafficking by the public prosecution.

The man, however, told the court on Monday that he had the consent of the children's parents, based in India, to take them to France to another relative, the paper said.

The children corroborated this claim. DNA tests have confirmed the couple are not the biological parents of the children, it said. The next hearing will be held on April 1 during which the children will be produced in court.
