After raising the pitch for troop reduction in Jammu and Kashmir, the People's Democratic Party, a partner in the state's ruling coalition, got no assurance on the issue from the Centre on Thursday other than an indication that discussions would continue.

PDP's patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, who had a 45-minute luncheon meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, said that the issues raised by his party were being discussed.

"Discussions on the issues -- troop reduction from civilian areas, repeal of anti-terror laws and vacating security forces from civilian areas -- will continue," Sayeed told media persons.

Though both sides refrained from giving details about the meeting, sources privy to the parleys said Sayeed was asked to wait till summer, after which the demand for troop reduction will be reviewed. But Sayeed demanded something immediately as a face saving measure for the PDP, the sources said.

Following this, Sayeed was asked to wait in the national capital for some more days and to speak to National Security Advisor M K Narayanan.

The sources said Sayeed was also asked to follow the ethics of coalition government and raise issues at relevant forums rather than in public. This was conveyed to him after he accused Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress of failing in his duties to carry forward the peace process and provide a corruption-free administration.

Sayeed, who had made it clear that he could not wait till summer for reduction in troops, skirted queries from media persons on the issues raised by him.

On the eve of his meeting with Dr Singh, Sayeed had on Wednesday night insisted that he will not be satisfied with 'window dressing' by the Centre on the PDP's demand for troop reduction.

The Prime Ministers' Office described Thursday's meeting as a routine one that the prime minister generally has with his leaders of partners in the UPA coalition.

"As per this exercise, the prime minister met Sayeed like a few days back he had met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee," PM's media advisor Sanjaya Baru said after the parleys.

Asked to comment on the discussions on issue like troop reduction and repeal of anti-terror laws, Baru said: "The discussions will continue."

Sayeed also held discussions with senior PDP leaders in New Delhi and sources said the party was likely to pull out its ministers from the Jammu and Kashmir government as a pressure tactic. However, there was no official confirmation on this.

The former chief minister declined to reply to a question on his statement yesterday that he needed some sort of assurance from the Centre as 'every day counts.' Asked whether the PDP would pull out of the coalition with the Congress in Kashmir, Sayeed said there was no need to put the cart before the horse.
