The Bajrang Dal on Wednesday dissociated itself from Babu Bajrangi, who has been served a notice by the Supreme Court on complaints that he was forcibly separating Hindu girls who have married outside their caste from their husbands.

The apex court on Monday reportedly issued notices to the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra apart from Bajrangi himself, based on complaints that he was forcibly trying to separate couples who have had an inter-caste marriage.

In a statement, Gujarat Bajrang Dal chief Ranchod Bharwad blamed the media for linking Bajrangi to the outfit.

"Bajrangi is not a part of Bajrang Dal. He was given a small role in a local unit in the city, but has not done much," Bharwad said.

Bajrangi, whose real name is Babubhai Patel, runs an NGO Navchetana, which claims to work for the rights of girls "forced or tricked" into marriage. He is also one of the main accused in the Naroda-Patiya massacre that took place during the post-Godhra communal riots.

Bajrangi was recently in the news for moral policing and had formed a "women's brigade" that visited Ahmedabad's parks and colleges and thrashed young couples found together.

He was also behind the protests against the screening of the controversial movie Parzania in Gujarat.
