Facing a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into allegations that he and his family members possessed wealth disproportionate to their income, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh on Tuesday met Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and complained that the Congress leadership was attempting to "fire" him ahead of Assembly elections.

Accompanied by party general secretary Amar Singh, the Samajwadi Party chief also submitted an audio recording containing a conversation purportedly between a journalist and the petitioner Vishwanath Chaturvedi in a public interest litigation against him in the Supreme Court.

The petitioner had a Congress background and in the recorded conversation, deregatory references were said to have been made against apex court judges.

The two leaders will also be meeting President A P J Abdul Kalam and Vice-President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Bhairon Singh Shekhawat later in the day to apprise them about these developments.

They said the party will raise the matter in both the Houses of Parliament and seek clarification from the government.

Emerging after a half-hour meeting with the speaker at his residence, the two SP leaders displayed before mediapersons the controversial CD and said they were ready to authenticate it. They want the CD to be sent to Central Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad to verify the voice of the peititoner.

The journalist, who had conducted this "sting" operation, has already accepted the fact, Amar Singh said adding, that the peitioner in the PIL was a Congress worker.
