At least 20 people, including policemen, were injured when villagers protesting construction of a boundary wall at the airport in New Delhi clashed with police late Monday night.
Police used batons and fired several rounds in the air to disperse the mob, which pelted stones at security personnel and set afire a truck carrying construction material to the site in Shahabada village.
Villagers have been opposing construction of the wall, saying it will cause inconvenience to them and the protest turned violent on Monday night after they squatted on a railway line and blocked trains, police said.
Police tried to remove them and several protestors and some 12 police personnel were injured in the brick batting and subsequent baton charge, a senior police officer said.
The situation remained tense in the locality in southwest Delhi and additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order.
Police have rounded up several persons after the violence and a case of rioting will be registered against them, sources said.
