The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to all states and Union territories asking them to explain why the registration of marriages has not been made compulsory for all religions.

A Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar Singh Panta directed the states and Union territories to file there responses within eight weeks.

The court issued notices after amicus curiae brought it to its notice that the judgment of the apex court directing the Centre and the states to make the registration of marriage compulsory was not being implemented uniformly cutting across religious lines.
