Fourteen persons, including a police officer, have been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in a case pertaining to the communal riots in Bhagalpur in 1989.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Sambhunath Mishra on Saturday gave life imprisonment to the 14 accused of killing 116 persons belonging to the minority community in Logain village in October 1989.
On June 27 a Bhagalpur court deferred announcement of quantum of punishment to the convicted as Jaiprakash Mandal, one of the convicts, was absconding
Others convicted in the case include the then officer in-charge of Jagdishpur police station, Ramchandra Singh, and village chowkidar, Thakur Paswan.
There were 24 accused in the case, involving the slaughter of 116 people, including women and children, at Logain village under Jagdishpur police station.
The victims were killed and their bodies dumped in a mass grave on which cauliflowers were planted to camouflage it.
Of the 24 accused, six died during the trial and four never turned up. They were declared proclaimed offenders and their properties were attached.
